How to do your eye makeup for every season

Eye makeup is very personal to the individual and depends on many factors. Eye colour. eye shape and complexion all need to be considered, as they all add to the perfect look. For example, if you have a pale or light skin shade, black eyeliner may be too harsh for you, brown, grey or blue liner would be softer.

Here are my musts for achieving the most flattering eye makeup that will give you confidence, making sure your eye makeup application is the best for you, when either doing your everyday look or something more daring for an evening or the party season.

I don't use toxic makeup, or anything that has synthetic ingredients, so I tend to lean towards certified organic products such as Inika Organic, which is Vegan too.

One great tip I learnt whilst training in makeup, was that eye makeup is the first thing you should do. It really does make sense, as you don't want to perfect your foundation, only to have the remnants of eyeshadow or mascara mistakes ruining your base. I always begin my makeup routine here:

  • Prime the eye area to encourage your eye makeup to have staying power! Don't be fooled by your skin type on this one, I have a drier skin type, but my eye lids are very oily, so I use a mattifying powder which helps prohibit shine any where on the face. For non-oily lids, I would use the Pure Perfection Primer to create a great base and staying power for your eye makeup.

  • Picking your eyeshadow - you can wear any colour eyeshadow you want to, but if you want your eyes to POP and be more noticeable, there are some rules with eye colour to follow. Blue eyes- browns, taupes, champagnes & terracottas. Green eyes- Pinks, bronze & mahogany. Brown eyes- Purple & bronzy golds. Grey eyes- Icy blues, steel greys & silver.

  • With eyeliner it's really down to personal preference if you like a pencil, gel, liquid or the softer powder look. Always remember, the reason for adding eyeliner is to make the eyes appear more elongated and noticeable by making the lash line appear thicker.

Examples of where to place your eyeliner for your eye shape are as follows:

Almond eyes - you are very lucky! You can add eyeliner anywhere you fancy and it will look fab.

Downturned eyes - Balance your downturned eye shape with an upturned winged eyeliner look, with liner on the upper lash line only.

Upturned eyes - a smoky eye and softer, smudged liner look will accentuate your eye shape perfectly.

Close set eyes - start your eyeliner look from the middle of your lids, rather than the inner corners, and bring the eyeliner out and past the outer corners of your eyes.

Wide set eyes - concentrate your eyeliner efforts to the inner corners of your top and bottom lash lines.

Round eyes - Apply a thin line along the inner corners, creating a thicker line as you move toward the outer corner.

Irrespective of eye colour, a must have eye liner for everyone is the Emerald Eye Liner, it makes any eye colour stand out!

  • Mascara choice is generally dictated by the look you want to achieve and how your lashes grow. Be careful of mascaras claiming to be waterproof, as this is where a lot of toxicity is added. For a natural, water-resistant choice without the chemicals, my favourite at the moment is the Bold Lash. I need it all, curl, volume and length and this is the best all round mascara to create all these effects in one. I

  • If you are needing more length to your lashes the Inika Organic Long Lash is perfect. The most effective mascara I have found for adding curl to your lashes is definitely the Inika Organic Curvy Lash. The curved brush really makes it so simple to add a noticeable curl and lift to your lash.
